As part of a multi-disciplinary team with Momentum Engineers, Fax Fordham, Gardiner Theobalds and Sanchez Benton, we were shortlisted for this national competition in 2021.
Commissioned by Frome town council, the project was to redevelop the c18th warehouses for the community, to include adult education facilities, flexible workspaces for start-up companies, and event spaces for cultural events.
Central to our approach was a careful and detailed analysis of the existing buildings, understanding their architectural and cultural merits, celebrating their found qualities, and setting these against any new elements, combining old and new. We believe this is a poetic way of reinvigorating old buildings as well as a cost-effective and environment approach to renewal.
The project also included a new square in front of the warehouses. As such we proposed a strong reciprocal relationship between the building and public space, developing the right activities within the ground floor and thinking carefully about how a new entrance could be formed within the existing buildings.
