Codrington College

Codrington College is the oldest Theological College in the Western Hemisphere and the oldest tertiary institution in the Caribbean. Set against the rough eastern coast of Barbados within 420 acres of land, the college and estate is rich in history and potential, including woodland, coastland, residential settlements, and farmland.

We were invited to submit proposals for a masterplan, to consider ways that the estate could be developed, to help attract investors and generate income, in order that the college could sustain itself for years to come.

As well as investigating tourism opportunities (bespoke weddings, glamping, marine tourism), we looked at how the college could reach out to the larger Bajan community. This included harnessing the small fishing market with a seasonal restaurant, opening up the land to hiking, and communicating the history of the former sugar plantation and its links with slavery. Other investigations included infrastructural changes, such as establishing a new road between coast and college and Photovoltaic electricity production.
