Working with old buildings: a lath and plaster wall

When working on an old building it is important to remember that our intervention is only a stage in its life, a moment in its history. We venerate old buildings not just for their quality, but for their history and of those that have inhabited them and left their marks upon their fabric.

This is why as architects we are mindful of a building’s past when considering its future needs. Change is necessary to accommodate modern life and this places new demands on our homes. As temporary custodians it is our duty as owners and architects to strike the right balance. Primarily, we approach historic buildings with the desire to respect and protect them for future generations, but we also aim, through innovative design, to make them freshly relevant to our time.

At Bindloss Dawes we have a wealth of experience working on complex projects, carrying out repair and alterations to both civic and residential listed buildings. At the moment we are working on 4 listed properties in Somerset – in Nunney, Bruton, Frome and Lottisham. These are at different stage of design and construction, with one project due to complete in Summer 2021.
